a fashion story
The best part of blogging is the ability to share my illustration technique and creative process with anyone who is interested! For me, every illustration tells a story….
Over the years I have cultivated my own style which is somewhere between the highly stylized fashion illustration based on proportions known as a “croquis” and a more traditional artist’s portrait. I use images from magazines, Pinterest, just about anywhere for inspiration and the foundation of the drawing, then add layers of color, elongate the legs and, voila! We have a fashion model.
But the model alone doesn’t tell the whole story….I like to create vision boards featuring patterns, color swatches, fonts, anything that speaks to me about a particular design or designer. Who is this girl? Where is she going? What are her dreams? What is her name? Where does she live? Is she a Starbuck’s gal or Dunkin’s? Gluten free? Self-absorbed or self-secure? What else is in her closet?
Alas, Coco Chanel said it best:
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
So who is the woman in pink Chanel featured here?
Hmmmnnn…her name is Margot, she lives near Washington Square Park in NYC, she drinks espresso exclusively from miniature porcelain cups, she has one tiny butterfly tattoo on her wrist which her mother disapproves of and she loves Magnolias which remind her of her childhood in suburban New Jersey which was decidedly uneventful….she is waiting for life’s big adventure to unfold!
What’s your fashion story? I’d love to know!
